Boxelder had “Bridge & Tunnel” event created for Friday, which would include a beer or two from from Finback Brewery; Equilibrium Brewery; Magnify Brewing Company; Voodoo Brewery; Dancing Gnome beer; Sand City Brewing; Graft Cider; Other Half Brewing Company and Deciduous Brewing Co.
I had planned on going once I saw the event and that it was on a Friday, though my friend, Christine, had sent out a message that she wanted to go and who else would want to meet up, myself and Cameo said we would. So prior to meeting at Boxelder, Cameo and I would go to Veza Sur.
At Veza Sur I walked up to the bar and sat down. I looked at the beer menu to decide what I wanted and ordered “La Curita Imperial Stout” a 10.2% Imperial stout that was brewed with molasses, dark malts and aged for 10months in bourbon barrels and finished off with whole Madagascar vanilla beans. While I’m drinking the beer, the guy next to me was like you ordered that beer.. and I’m like yeah? (Didn’t understand the point he was trying to make.) We look at the beer board together and he points out the high abv, and? I tell him, I love porters and stouts. Lucky for me, he ended up paying his tab prior to this conversation, so now that he was gone, I had an empty seat for Cameo.
So I though that La Curita, did have a bourbon smell and maybe some slight molasses and dark malts. Taste-wise, I noticed some dark malts a little. Some vanilla. I think it needed more vanilla. The Bourbon barrel taste I felt like right away doesn’t come on strong, even when it warmed up. I think it’s decent.
After that I had the Mangolandia Mango Blonde Ale at 4.8%, described as having mangos and being a sessionable blonde ale. I have to say, there is great mango flavor and it’s definitely a nice light beer. There were initially some carbonation/fizzy bubbles. I enjoyed this beer and great one to drink in Miami on all those hot days!
Once I was done drinking the Mangolandia and my friend finishing her flight, off to Boxelder we went!!
We got to boxelder, which not surprisingly was packed full of people inside and out. Lucky for us two people were leaving so we were able to grab some seats at the bar near the front entrance. We both love dark beers, so Cameo and I both started with Coquito, from Finback and Mikkeller San Diego collab, a milk stout with lactose, cinnamon, nutmeg, coconut and vanilla at 8.2%. I heard someone order a half pour of something, so I went with that since there was a heavy one coming up after.
The Coquito. You could smell the coconut, cinnamon and nutmeg. Tasted the cinnamon, nutmeg and coconut. This beer was delicious!!
Next, we were at that point waiting for the 8pm Tapping of Big Black Voodoo Daddy, an imperial stout aged in wild turkey bourbon barrels with Madagascar vanilla beans at 12% from Voodoo Brewery. Luckily it was only a few minutes to 8pm, once that hit I asked the bartender for one and so did my friend Cameo and some other at the bar.
Big black voodoo daddy, WOW, if you like bourbon flavor, hello! You will like this. Dark beer that smells like and taste like bourbon. I tasted some notes of vanilla, more in the back end after it warms up a little. This was great!
I happened to walk outside for a moment, I was greeted with the smell of weed, which is nice, except when you don’t have any with you, you tend to be envious of everyone else smoking that. Though I happened to be at the right place at the right time. Someone appeared to be looking for a bottle opener, to which the bottle they were trying to open was from Toppling Goliath, Mornin’ Delight, so I provided them with one since I actually have two on my key chain. They offered to pour me a little so I went back inside to get a plastic cup and came back out for a pour.
Holy crap this was fucking amazing! The Mornin’ delight tastes like maple syrup. Throw some waffles on the table and man, I’m golden. May have to try and seek this out somehow for myself. I’m elated that I was able to try some, I felt so lucky to have some of this!
After that I went with BBA Won’t Back Down, described as Imperial Oatmeal porter aged in 100 proof flag hill distillery bourbon barrels by Deciduous at 9.5%. I thought this one was alright, though I wasn’t too much of a fan of this one.
The last beer of the night for me was from Weldwerks their Cherry Cobbler Berliner at 7.2%. It’s described on untapped as, “brimming with tart cherries, sweet cherries, and creamy vanilla, Cherry Cobbler Berliner is the perfect pairing for any celebration. This pastry-style kettle sour starts similar to our other Berliner Weisse beers, soured with lactobacillus bacteria in the kettle, then fermented clean. We added lactose to enhance the creaminess and boost the body, then we fermented the beer on an absurd amount of both tart pie cherries and sweet black cherries. Finally, we added vanilla beans and graham cracker to contribute even more creaminess and complexity and to bring out more of the “cobbler” character, making this an essential “side dish” for any feast.”
I thought this was good. The flavor comes thru, a little tart and the graham cracker at the end. I thought it was a good end to the darker beers, the beer was enjoyable and the cherry flavor in this was great and on point.
