I decided to come to Beat Culture on Sunday to try Cagation. My friend Cameo, had mentioned wanting to go via Instagram, I asked her when she wanted to go. Since I did not get a response, I opted to figure out when I could get there to try Cagation and well, going there on Sunday before going to Lincoln’s Beard for the Don’t Be Jelly Fest/Event seemed to fit in.
I also recalled that they had a breakfast menu and that they open really early, so I confirmed the time they opened by checking their website and facebook, and they open at 7 a.m., I figured I could also have breakfast and hang out there for a bit, I was considering going to Spanish Marie afterwards as I saw that they too recently came out with a beer I wanted to try which was a porter.
I noticed the beertender was delivering food and he said he would be with me in a moment. Once he was done delivering food to the corresponding tables, I order Cagation and the first thing on the breakfast menu, which was, “Fall Guy” which per the menu is described as “Two cage-free eggs any style, served with crispy smoked bacon, two fluffy sweet cream pancakes and your choice of sides.” I also ordered a side of Croquettas, because I love having them for or with breakfast!
Cagation, 5.2%, is described as “Cagation |cæɡˈateɪʃ(ə)n| – n. 1. A roasty Porter aged on coconut toasted here at the brewery and cocoa nibs from a local Miami, FL, chocolatier, Cao Chocolate, resulting in a rich, creamy dark beer with coconut aroma and huge dark chocolate flavor. 2. A Miami-ism originating from “tremendous cag.”
Cagation was great! I got the cocoa nib/dark chocolate flavor and some coconut. I would definitely order and drink this again. I think it is a well made porter, and it follows thru on the description it gives itself.
The food was delicious! Definitely a great way to start my day here.
At some point, I realized that I had seen the beertender in front of me at J. Wakefield, I could have sworn, so I asked him to confirm. He did work there, I have to say I was glad to see him here! I remember he was an awesome beertender at J. Wakefield, and I was glad to know that I know that I can receive great service at Beat Culture and look towards a friendly, familiar face. Plus, someone who I could also converse with about beer, beer styles and breweries.
After Cagation, I went with Irregardless, 5.6%, which is described as “Irregardless |/ˌɪrɪˈɡɑrdləs/| – n. In collaboration with Ardent Craft Ales in Richmond, Virginia, a Hefeweizen hopped with Wai-iti hops from New Zealand imparting refreshing notes of mandarin oranges, stone fruit and hints of vanilla. “Pero like irregardless means the same as regardless, bro”.”
I wanted to go for a lighter style so this was a good choice. I think the Hefeweizen was good, I got orange and vanilla notes and it was refreshing after Cagation, I enjoyed this and would probably drink more of this in the future.
So Drew, one of the awesome beertenders at Beat Culture, mentioned that there was only one pour left of the mead, I Can’t Believable. At the bar, there was previously a discussion about mead with two other patrons at the bar (who happened to be there for their first cruise). I appreciate the fact that he told me, so I could order this before I couldn’t.
So, my last drink was, I Can’t Believable described as “|ai kænt ənbəˈlēvəb(ə)l| 1. a mead (see honey wine) fermented with tons of guava and locally-sourced orange blossom honey from McCoy’s Sunny South apriaries reaching the aroma and taste of guava marmalade just like how Abuelita use to make… except at 14% ABV.”
I was very happy as I tasted the first sip go into my mouth, lightly swirled it onto my tongue and then gulp, taste it go down my throat as I swallowed it. Delicious!! I am so happy that they are making meads or that they will/do make meads and I’m excited to see what else mead-wise they come out with in the future!
I got the guava flavor. This was very easy drinking, though you definitely have to be careful since that high abv will certainly creep up on you with this smooth going guava mead.
After the mead, I headed to Lincoln’s Beard to drink some beers before they got crazy busy for, Don’t Be Jelly.
