First things first, to anyone reading this post, please bare with me while I get accustomed to editing and updating this site, as it may go thru some changes, though now that it is active, I will certainly be trying for a few posts a month, depending.
On Saturday the 12th, Funky Buddha had it’s Maple Bacon Coffee Porter Fest which ended at 5pm and where Fat Tap comes in, with a lovely tap list for an “after party” that begins at 5pm. I didn’t venture to Funky Budhha’s fest, nor have I. In the past I was interested in going to this fest – though at present, doesn’t really make me interested in going other than I want to go to say I went and to also see what what other breweries go to the Funky Budhha fest, maybe next year?
I noticed Fat Tap had created an event, as the day came, I took a look as they had been posting what breweries would be on tap with certain beers.
Prior to seeing the above tap list, I had my heart set on trying the following beers:
- Aslin – Volcano Sauce (Sour Ale w/ Blackberry, Blueberry,Vanilla, Lactose)
- Burley Oak – Double Blackberry Black Currant J.R.E.A.M
- Burley Oak – Jelly Not Jam (Blackberry, Boysenberry, Black Currant)
- Burley Oak – Madras Gose
- Crooked Run – The Clobbler
- Crooked Run – Machismo
- Crooked Run – White Guys from Maine Make the Best Salsa
After ordering my first beer, Aslin Volcano sauce and sitting my happy ass down, I realized, I could order six, though that would be too much money than I wanted to spend, especially drinking solo. So I opted to drink four out of the six I wanted – besides, I still have other beer events to attend to.
First Up, Aslin – Volcano Sauce
Upon smelling it, it certainly smelled like blueberry/sweetness. I’m not sure if its the vanilla/lactose combo that is also adding to my smell in regards to smelling sweet. I loved the berries in it and thought it was well balanced. I would certainly drink this again.
Next up – (2) Crooked Run – The Clobbler
I feel like I should have started with this one, before having the Volcano Sauce by Aslin. Not sure if having Volcano Sauce first impacted the tartness for me in this beer. It smelled like blueberry and a little sweetness. I think I tasted the blueberry initially at the first few sips/tries, where after that the blueberry seemed to fall off and to me it feels like more blueberry, please. I think the sweetness/milk sugar and tartness of it detract me from this beer, I don’t like the sweet/tart combo on this one. Overall, an alright beer – with blueberry tarti-ness.
Third Beer – Burley Oak – Double Blackberry Black Currant J.R.E.A.M
So, I was stuck between getting Burley Oak J.R.E.A.M or Jelly not Jam – as they both have blackberry and black currant within, though Jelly not Jam has boysenberry and J.R.E.A.M does not. With a little outside help to decide which to try, I opted for J.R.E.A.M. I tried taking a better picture, though was unable to – definitely has a nicer color in glass vs. my photo.
I definitely enjoyed this all the way through. It is hard for me to say which flavor I taste first, though I love the balanced flavors and just how delicious it is and the flavors coming thru. It has a little sour/tart flavor, though minimal to me at least in comparison to the beer I had before it. I would definitely have this one again.
Then it was time to decide, shit, what’s going to be the last beer? The Madras Gose sounds good with the following description stated on untapped: Cocktail inspired gose conditioned on cranberry, orange, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Almost sounds like Christmas to me, which made me want, but then there is also… Machismo to consider and that is described on untapped as: a rich, thick stout aged in bourbon barrels with habanero peppers. Expect dark chocolate, slight smoke, spirits, and moderate heat. This is the beer you sip in a studded leather armchair, a cigar in your hand, contemplating your life of daring risks, beautiful women, and great riches.
And man, do I love me those dark beers. The other one – White Guys from Maine Make the Best Salsa, sounds good, though I wasn’t sure I wanted to end with that one.
So I opted for my lovely darkness, Machismo.
It smells smokey and a little sweet and faint bit of chocolate. First sip was nice, though then you have the heat surface after drinking it. Be warned, if you opt for this beer, it’s spicy. I enjoyed this, not something I would drink all the time nor drink it down fast. As I tried to drink the last of my glass, I opted to leave a little, I didn’t want to feel like I was burning my mouth just try to finish the last remnants of this beer.
